Make reading easier to begin
Reading with ADHD can be difficult when a page feels visually dense, the topic is not immediately rewarding or there are many competing distractions. It is a common access need, not a sign of laziness.
Experimenting with format and environment is often more useful than forcing longer sessions.
Use shorter, clearer sessions
Choose a small target: one page, one section or ten minutes. Set a timer, take a brief break and return if you can. Summarise a paragraph in a note or say it aloud to keep your attention involved.
Audiobooks, text-to-speech, larger type, a reading ruler or a quiet background sound may help some people.
Reduce friction
Put the phone out of reach, keep only the material you need visible and decide in advance what “done” looks like. Read at the time of day when you have the most energy rather than when you think you should.
If a text is important, ask whether an accessible format or extra time is available.
Be kind to your attention
Attention naturally varies. If reading difficulties are longstanding and affect study, work or daily life, a qualified professional can help explore the wider context.
